Hoosiers Protest Abuse of Federal Power
Photographs and interviews from Saturday's protest on Indy's North Side.
Indianapolis activist Nancy Kohn sent along the following photographs and interviews from an anti-authoritarianism protest on the North Side of Indianapolis on Saturday, January 17, with the following caption:
Despite 25 degree weather more than 150 Hoosiers came out to stand with signs for an hour along 86th Street in Nora in order to call attention to the abuses of power occurring in the U.S.

James Todd, former Indianapolis Police officer (holding flags):
“The behavior of the ICE officers in Minneapolis and elsewhere to me is like Gestapo tactics. When I was a police officer, you had to identify yourself. You didn’t wear a mask unless you were in an undercover situation and that was a rare occasion. You had to have probable cause. Everybody in this country deserves due process. We have people who are snatching people off the street and disappearing them like they’re in Chile or Argentina. It’s horrifying.”
Tom Sherer, organizer of Hoosiers for Constitutional Democracy:
“The thing that strikes me about all of this distraction is what must be in the Epstein files for him to invade Venezuela, invade Minneapolis, and threaten to invade Greenland in order to delay the release and get everybody’s minds off the Epstein files. I just can’t imagine.”
Susan (with No Kings sign, preferred to not use last name):
“It’s really heartening to see so many people out in support of democracy. The times are really hard, the temperatures are really cold but we’re out here and we’ve got a lot of support from our community which we couldn’t be more grateful for.”
Lori Nola Losee (held sign Courage is Contagious):
“I just think it’s important to come out and speak up and exercise our right to disagree. What ICE is doing goes far beyond what their initial indecipherable. They tell us they’re going after the worst of the worst, trying to take criminals off the street, but the tactics they’re using are meant to terrorize all of us. And it’s not right.”
