Portraits & Perspectives: Ashley Hammac + Hold 'em Accountable

Derrick sat down with soil scientist and candidate for House District 16 Ashley Hammac during this PIN special event.

During the special Portraits and Perspectives event hosted by Progressive Indiana Network in downtown Indianapolis on February 21st, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ashley Hammack, candidate for Indiana House District 16. The evening was designed to bring voters face to face with candidates in a more personal, thoughtful setting, and this conversation embodied that spirit.

Ashley represents a largely rural district stretching from Brookston and Battleground northward toward the DeMotte area, firmly within Indiana’s 4th Congressional footprint. In our discussion, he explained what compelled his to run despite not seeing himself as a traditional politician. For him, this moment in history feels critical. He spoke candidly about stepping forward not because he seeks a political career, but because he felt a responsibility to act.

We talked about why so many grassroots candidates are entering races this cycle and how concerns about redistricting and political consolidation have energized new voices. Ashley framed today’s political climate not as a simple left-versus-right divide, but as what he described as “top versus bottom” — a question of power and who truly holds it.

Our conversation also explored what being “progressive” means in practice, his thoughts on citizen-led governance, and the importance of ordinary people stepping into public service. Drawing inspiration from his family’s history of civic involvement, he emphasized the value of participation over perfection.

The Portraits and Perspectives format allowed for a deeper look at motivations, values, and the personal convictions that drive people to seek office. This interview captures that moment — not just a campaign pitch, but a conversation about representation, responsibility, and what it means to serve.
