Portraits & Perspectives: Carl Stutsman + Hold 'em Accountable

Derrick sat down with State House District 48 candidate Carl Stutsman at this PIN special event.

During the Portraits and Perspectives event hosted by the Progressive Indiana Network in downtown Indianapolis on February 21st, I had the chance to sit down briefly with Carl Stutsman, a candidate for Indiana House District 48. The event brought together candidates, organizers, and community members for a day focused on dialogue, storytelling, and civic engagement across Indiana.

Carl represents a district in northern Elkhart County, where communities like Elkhart and Bristol sit at the heart of one of the most productive manufacturing regions in the country. Our conversation begins with a look at that region and the economic activity that defines it, including the RV manufacturing industry that has made Elkhart County globally known.

But like many conversations about local politics, the discussion quickly moves beyond geography and into the deeper realities shaping communities. Carl reflects on his personal connections to law enforcement through family members who have served in the field, which leads us into a broader conversation about public safety, policing, and the way those issues are often simplified in political rhetoric.

We talk about the difference between the reality of everyday policing and the narratives that dominate headlines. Carl shares his perspective that most officers enter the profession with genuine intentions to protect their communities, while also acknowledging the difficult history some departments have faced and the importance of understanding those complexities.

What struck me most during this exchange was the emphasis on perspective. Instead of framing the issue as a simple political divide, the conversation turns toward understanding institutions, listening to communities, and recognizing that most public service roles exist in a complicated space between responsibility and scrutiny.

This short conversation offers a snapshot of how local candidates think about community, service, and the realities behind the issues that shape public debate in Indiana.
