During the Portraits and Perspectives event hosted by Progressive Indiana Network in downtown Indianapolis on February 21, I had the opportunity to sit down with Liliana Young, a candidate for Indiana House District 61, which covers Bloomington. The event brought together candidates, organizers, and community members for conversations about the future direction of Indiana politics and the role grassroots leadership can play in shaping it.
In our conversation, Liliana shares what distinguishes her campaign in a Democratic primary and how her perspective as a lifelong service industry worker informs her approach to policy. She speaks candidly about the economic pressures many Hoosiers face, including rising rent, stagnant wages, and the daily reality of trying to make ends meet in an economy that often feels stacked against working people.
We also discuss the broader political moment and why more progressive candidates are stepping forward to run for office. For Liliana, the answer lies in engagement and the belief that change only happens when people who care deeply about their communities are willing to step into the political arena.
The conversation moves into questions about political philosophy, the balance between ideological divides and economic inequality, and the importance of standing firmly on principles while working within the legislative process. Liliana also reflects on leaders who inspire her and the importance of sincerity, conviction, and consistency in public service.
Several policy priorities come into focus, particularly worker-centered economic policy, affordable housing, healthcare access, and higher wages, along with her commitment to defending civil rights and the dignity of marginalized communities.
This discussion is part of an ongoing effort to give voters a clearer understanding of the people seeking to represent them and the ideas shaping Indiana’s political landscape.
